The mural PEACE FLOWERS, by Belgian artist Tom Cech, vividly highlights moments where Canada and Belgium intersected through war and peace. It features two powerful symbols: the yellow "Peace Rose of Ghent," commemorating the 1814 treaty that fixed the Canada-U.S. border, and the Remembrance Poppy, inspired by Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields." The piece honors the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers who helped liberate Europe and recognizes the pioneering Canadian artist Mary Riter Hamilton, who documented WWI destruction in Belgium and France for future generations.
