The Westboro Gateway Mural (located on the retaining wall at Churchill Ave north of Byron) is a 2020 replacement of the iconic 1997 Sir Winston Churchill mural by Shaun McInnis. After decades of weather wear and graffiti, the Westboro Village BIA, in partnership with local community associations, commissioned the collective Style Over Status to reimagine the entrance to the neighborhood.
The new work is a dense, vibrant tapestry of local identity. It moves away from the singular portrait of the past and instead weaves together elements of Westboro’s history and ecology: the waves and Great Blue Herons of Westboro Beach, the architecture of the old Nepean City Hall, and nods to the historic streetcar line (now Byron Linear Park). It is a visual transition from the area’s rugged past to its active, nature-integrated present.
